A Mission to Control Rabies & Promote Animal Welfare
Rabies is a fatal viral disease affecting both animals and humans. In India, over 15 million stray dogs (Livestock Census 2019) are at risk due to low vaccination coverage. Infected dogs often become aggressive and may bite, spreading the virus. In 2024 alone, India recorded over 3.7 million dog bite cases and at least 54 suspected human rabies deaths (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare). Most victims are children and rural residents. Rabies is 100% preventable through timely vaccination—for both animals and humans. The Government of India aims to eliminate human rabies by 2030 under the National Rabies Control Programme.
To address the rising threat of rabies, Proyash Welfare Association launched Project Abala in 2022, with the dual objective of rabies control and ensuring the good health of stray animals.
Under this initiative, we have conducted multiple stray animal vaccination drives across West Bengal, and have successfully vaccinated over 2,000 stray dogs to date. Each drive is carried out with the support of professional stray animal catchers, trained paraveterinary staff, and supervised by expert veterinary surgeons to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Our mission aligns with the Government of India’s goal to eliminate rabies by 2030, and we remain committed to building a safer and healthier environment for both humans and animals.

Prevent Pet Abandonment in India
India faces a growing pet abandonment crisis, with nearly 80 million dogs and cats living on streets or in shelters. Around 50% of pet owners admit to abandoning their pets, often due to lack of time, rising medical costs, or impulsive buying of high-maintenance breeds. In many cases, owners can’t even afford basic food & health treatment leading to neglect. Exotic breeds like Huskies and Pugs are frequently discarded due to health issues and climate unsuitability. Abandonment cases rise sharply during monsoons and periods of financial stress.
To address rising pet neglect and abandonment, Proyash Welfare Association organizes free health camps twice or thrice a year for both pets and stray animals across Naihati, Kolkata, Burdwan, and several other towns and villages in West Bengal. So far, over 1,369 pets have benefited from these camps. Each camp is supported by expert veterinary surgeons from government hospitals, ensuring quality care. The initiative has been widely appreciated by pet owners and communities alike, promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Spreading Awareness & Tackling the Rising Challenge of Stray Animal Cruelty in India
Stray animal cruelty remains one of the most pressing challenges in India, including Kolkata and its surrounding regions. Incidents of violence against stray animals, particularly dogs, are on the rise—with recent reports confirming the mysterious deaths of several stray dogs in Newtown. According to government and NGO sources, thousands of animal cruelty cases are reported annually across the country,
many involving brutal acts against defenseless strays. Proyash Welfare Association is actively working to address this alarming issue by raising public awareness, organizing community outreach programs, and collaborating with government officials and veterinary experts.
Through education, compassion, and legal advocacy, the organization is committed to creating a safer and more humane environment for stray animals.
Proyash Welfare Association’s Vision for a Better Tomorrow
At Proyash Welfare Association, we envision a future where every stray animal is safe, cared for, and given the dignity they deserve. With this goal in mind, we are determined to establish a dedicated shelter and sterilization camp for stray animals—a compassionate initiative that will provide them with food, medical care, and a permanent haven.
However, such a mission requires substantial resources and support. This is not just our dream—it can be a shared effort. We sincerely appeal to kind-hearted individuals, animal lovers, and compassionate citizens to come forward and support us. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, can help turn this vision into a reality and bring lasting change to the lives of countless voiceless beings.
Let us stand together and build a kinder, safer world for our stray friends.
